    Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen - the so-called northernmost settlement in the world. Longyearbyen was founded in 1906 by John Monroe Longyear as a mining settlement. However, since its foundation and until 1926, the settlement was known as Longyear City. In 1916 Longyear City was sold to the Norwegian Store Norks Spitsbergen Kulkompani, which changed the name in 1926, replacing the word 'City' with the Norwegian word 'Byen'.

During the Second World War the settlement suffered a lot and most of the buildings were destroyed or burned down during the bombardments. In the years after the Second World War, Longyearbyens' infrastructure was rebuilt. Coal mining has always been risky, expensive and not lucrative in the high Arctic. It was more governmental and geopolitical interests that supported and demanded remaining in the Arctic.

In the 1990s, most of the mining operations were moved from Longyearbyen to Svea. With the new, large mine in place, nothing stood in the way of a turnaround, and in the early 2000s the company actually made a profit for a few years.

However, the focus had already turned more and more to research and tourism in recent years, and this has remained the case to this day.
