Ny Ålesund

Ny Ålesund - the home of research and the place where you can find the northernmost post office in the world.

Ny Ålesund also originated as a mining settlement. Due to the enormously high accident rate, the settlement was closed in the 1960s and coal mining was buried. Nowadays you can find researchers from different nations in the still existing houses. The focus is completely on research and so it is only possible for us tourists to pay a short visit to explore the area. There are no overnight accommodations in Ny Ålesund for commercial use.

Ny Ålesund is also known as the starting point for several North Pole expeditions by Roald Amundsen, Lincoln Ellsworth and Umberto Nobile. A truly exciting place with a lot of impressive history.
