May - November
This day trip takes you in the closed RIB boat to Ny-Ålesund - one of the most interesting places on Svalbard and possibly in the world.
Ny-Ålesund is considered one of the northernmost settlements in the world. Originally built as a settlement for coal mining, Ny-Ålesund became a place where history was written early on. Many famous polar expeditions started here. Among them was the airship expedition of the explorer Roald Amundsen in 1926.
Many sites in Ny-Ålesund still bear witness to the lively history of coal mining and polar expeditions. Since the 1960s the mine has stood idle, and instead the settlement is now known as an international research station that collects important data on climate and the environment.
You will be picked up from your accommodation in the morning and taken to the ship in the harbour of Longyearbyen. You will then set off on a four to five hour trip through the Isfjorden towards Ny-Ålesund. Depending on the weather, there will be time for short breaks to observe the unique natural and animal world of Svalbard.
Once you arrive in Ny-Ålesund, a warm meal and a guided tour of the settlement await you. Afterwards you will return to Longyearbyen.
This tour is conducted in English by one of our local partner companies and, with a duration of 11 to 12 hours, is one of the longer day tours.
