    Svea

In 1917, the Svea coal mine was built by the Swedish company AB Spetsbergens Svenska Kolfält. With the takeover by Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani in 1934, the property passed into Norwegian hands. The Second World War was responsible for destroying the entire estate in 1944. However, only a short time later, operations were resumed after reconstruction. Over the following years, due to the less attractive location and less lucrative mining of the coal, the operation was temporarily stopped again and again.

Until the point where in 2002 the new Svea Nord mine was put into operation. With the new infrastructure, they took over the top of production and made the company profitable for the first time since its inception. After that came the fall, the coal price was too low to remain economically attractive and so the mine was shut down again. Then in 2017 the decision was made to stop the operation completely and since then the coal mine settlement has been gradually being deconstructed. Soon no residues of the mine and associated settlement should be visible.
