Snow hiking

1. October – 15. May

Where the snowmobile covers great distances, hiking slows everything down: every step over the crisp, snow-covered terrain brings you closer to the stillness, the light, and the small details that make the High Arctic so unforgettable. It's an experience for all the senses, where the crunch of snow underfoot and the vast silence around you become part of the journey itself.

Depending on conditions and the group's fitness, a snow hike can lead across gentle, open plains, along frozen shorelines, or up to viewpoints that reveal sweeping panoramas of glaciers, fjords, and distant peaks. Modern snowshoes or skis make it possible to move comfortably over deep snow, and our guides set a pace and route that suit everyone — there's no rush, only the rhythm of walking through one of the most pristine landscapes on Earth. Along the way there's always time to pause, take photographs, and look out for traces of Arctic wildlife in the snow.

Safety and preparation are part of every hike. Our experienced guides carry the necessary equipment, keep a close eye on the weather and surroundings, and ensure the group stays warm, comfortable, and well looked after throughout. With the right clothing and a few simple layers, even those new to winter hiking can take part and feel at ease.

A snow hike is for anyone who wants to feel the Arctic rather than just pass through it — to breathe the cold, clear air, hear the silence, and stand in a landscape shaped entirely by snow, ice, and light. It's a slower, deeper way to connect with Svalbard, and one that stays with you long after the last footprints have faded.

Equipment

In addition to classic hiking equipment such as sturdy shoes, we recommend that you pack plenty of warm clothing for a snow hike on Svalbard. We have put together a small list for you:

Good footwear (sturdy, warm hiking boots that reach above the ankle)
Water and windproof outer layer
Warm woollen ski underwear
Warm gloves including undergloves
Warm woollen socks
Face protection (Buff)

You can find even more information on the right clothing and a packing list to download in our arctic clothing guide.
