Hiking and Trekking

All year

Hiking is the most authentic way to experience Svalbard — step by step, at your own pace, and right up close to Arctic nature. Far from roads and paved paths, every tour leads out into a vast, untouched landscape of mountains, valleys, glaciers, and coastlines, where often the only tracks are your own. Whether on a relaxed day hike or a multi-day trek through the wilderness, travelling on foot means taking in the Arctic with all your senses: the clear air, the endless expanse, and a silence broken only by nature itself.

Day hikes are the ideal introduction and can be fully adapted to the group's experience and fitness. Rewarding destinations await even in the surroundings of Longyearbyen: viewpoints with sweeping vistas over the fjords, old traces of the mining era, valleys and mountainsides from which the Arctic landscape reveals itself in all its grandeur. Our guides choose the route and length to suit the group, so that beginners and seasoned hikers alike get their money's worth — and along the way there's always time to pause, take photographs, and look out for Arctic wildlife.

The beauty of hiking lies in its versatility: we're happy to tailor the focus of a tour entirely to your interests. Would you like to go in search of fossils and hunt through Svalbard's rock for traces of times long past? Or head up onto a glacier to experience the immense world of ice and crevasses up close? Perhaps wildlife takes centre stage, with an eye out for reindeer, Arctic foxes, and birds? A true glacier hike is possible too — where we have ourselves dropped off by boat, for instance, and make our way across a rugged, crevasse-rich glacier. And for those who want to aim high, tours to various summits are on offer, rewarding you with wide panoramas over the Arctic landscape.

For those who want to immerse themselves even more deeply in the wilderness, a multi-day trek offers a real adventure. With everything we need in our backpacks, we make our way through remote regions over several days, pitch our tent in the evenings, and take turns on the bear watch. Far from any civilization, you experience the Arctic here in all its rawness — a sense of freedom and self-reliance that's hard to put into words. Such tours demand a little more fitness and preparation, but they reward you with impressions that last a lifetime.

Safety and good preparation are, of course, part of every hike. Our experienced guides know the terrain, keep a close eye on the weather and surroundings, and lead the group responsibly through a landscape that is as beautiful as it is demanding. In a region where polar bears are a reality, constant vigilance and the right equipment are a firm part of every tour.

Whether as a short day hike or a grand trekking adventure, travelling on foot lets you experience Svalbard as directly and intensely as no other way can: in the heart of nature, far from everything, and fully in the rhythm of the Arctic.
