Snow-kiting

1. March – 10. May

Snowkiting is one of the most spectacular ways to experience Svalbard's wide, open expanses: with the power of the wind in your kite, you glide across endless snowfields on skis, past mountains and glaciers, carried by nothing but the Arctic breeze. It's a sense of freedom unmatched in this landscape — silent, powerful, and completely in tune with the elements.

We generally offer snowkiting in the form of multi-day tours — either from Longyearbyen or from a wilderness camp. This leaves enough time to make the most of the conditions, to make real progress, and to fully enjoy the vastness of the Arctic. Our camp on the east coast is especially well suited to this: with a group of several people, it makes an ideal base — right in the heart of the wilderness, far from any civilization, and with kiting possibilities straight from the camp itself.

You don't have to be an experienced snowkiter to take part — though some prior experience is needed, either with a kite or on skis or a snowboard. On that foundation, our guides (not professional kite instructors, but experienced hobby kiters!) will teach you the necessary technique, so that you grow more confident step by step and can savour the experience to the full. For already very experienced snowkiters, we're also happy to put together varied programs — with mountain slopes, downwind sessions, and other challenges that draw the very best out of wind and terrain.

Day tours are, in principle, also possible, but comparatively expensive, as they require several guides. For most guests, the camp is therefore the more rewarding and coherent way to immerse themselves fully in the adventure of snowkiting. Kite tours are offered exclusively on a private basis.

Safety always comes first. In an environment with changeable weather, great distances, and the constant presence of Arctic wildlife, careful preparation is essential. Our guides keep a close eye on the wind and weather, choose suitable terrain, and lead the group responsibly through a landscape that is as beautiful as it is demanding.

Snowkiting on Svalbard is more than just a sport: it's the feeling of becoming one with the wind and the open expanse, carried by the energy of the Arctic through one of the most pristine landscapes on Earth — fast, free, and unforgettable.

Equipment

The kites can be rented from us – we have older models from PowerKite as well as current models from Flysurfer available.

In addition, we recommend warm, weatherproof clothing in several layers, windproof gloves, a face cover (buff), and good ski goggles against the wind and the bright Arctic light. A detailed packing list for the Arctic winter will be sent to you after booking.
