Skins under your skis on the way up, untouched slopes on the way down — ski touring, known in Norwegian as randonnée, combines the calm of climbing under your own power with the pure joy of the descent, right in the heart of Svalbard's magnificent mountain world. Past glaciers and rugged peaks, with sweeping views over the fjords, this is arguably the most beautiful way to experience the Arctic. Depending on your starting point and appetite for adventure, a whole range of options is open to you.
For a well-rounded experience, we recommend — depending on your off-piste experience — planning at least two days: the first day is dedicated to avalanche training and a shorter tour, while the second takes you out into more demanding and varied terrain. But skiing is perfectly possible with little experience too — in that case we simply stay on gentler terrain and adapt the route to the group's level.
The simplest and most affordable way to start is right on the doorstep: from Longyearbyen, varied slopes and peaks await in the immediate surroundings — no long journey required, but with the freedom to fine-tune each tour to the day's weather and snow conditions.
For those who want to venture further, we combine snowmobile and skis. The snowmobile lets us cover greater distances and reach remote valleys and mountains that would be all but inaccessible on foot — leaving more energy for what it's all about: skiing through untracked terrain.
In May, when the midnight sun stands over the island and the fjords become navigable again, a particularly striking option opens up: the combination of boat and skis. We have ourselves dropped off along remote stretches of coastline and climb straight into the mountains from the water — a unique interplay of sea, ice, and summits.
And for anyone seeking the grand adventure, a multi-day ski tour is the way to go — for example to the Isfjord Radio wilderness hotel or out to our camp on the east coast. Here, daily skiing and overnight stays far from any civilization merge into one continuous Arctic experience spanning several days.
Whichever option you choose, ski touring lets you experience Svalbard in a way as raw and intense as only a few ever will.
Please note: skis, ski boots, helmet, and avalanche equipment are not included in the price — they must either be brought along or rented locally. A shovel and avalanche probe, and if needed — subject to availability — an avalanche transceiver as well, can be borrowed from us.
A private tour means full flexibility — in route, breaks, photo stops, and pace. Get in touch — we'd be happy to put together a personalized offer for you.
